One of the most wonderful works that God has in store for man is that His word will be spread, so that all nations will call Him blessed and the whole earth will be filled with His glory. (Psalms 72)

In addition, through the family the gospel is taught and bound in the hearts of each generation.

My parents served in the Peace Corps in the early 1960's. They brought the rich Ethiopian culture into our home, and some of our closest friends are from that area of the world. The son of our Ethiopian friends just left for a mission to Uganda, which also covers Ethiopia. When I think of him teaching the gospel to those beloved people, my heart can't help but rejoice.

(This was supposed to be July's painting, but it is definitely a 2 month painting due to size and detail.)

I have been doing a series of paintings that I call my "Zion" series. They stem from a memory that I have of when I was 6 years old and sitting in my Primary class at church. The teacher asked a question, and as she did, I remember having the answer come to my mind. Simultaneously, as I was staring at the wall, an image of a tiny dwelling seemed to move towards me. I said, "Zion!" and the teacher said, "You're right!" I don't remember the question, but I remember having the answer given to my mind, visually and mentally. I've thought a lot about that event since, studying to find out what Zion really is. And the best answer that I can come up with is through the visual gift that I was given as a little child. Zion is a dwelling that you can carry with you. Zion is where ever you are, where ever God dwells.

This particular painting has an added meaning. We are trying to adopt two children. We want to bring them home, to our family. You can see them in the background, waiting to come closer. And we are waiting and hoping for them.

People's Choice Award

I was so happy to learn that my painting "Evelyn" won a People's Choice Award at the Fulfill the Vision show, which was held at the Washington DC Temple Visitor's Center!
The show came down today. It really was an amazing exhibit of works.

Rain barrel project

Fairfax County is trying to promote rain barrel use. So they asked artists all over the county to submit a drawing (see above) and they would choose some of them to paint these barrels, which will be placed all over the county at highly visible locations. They will post signs with them explaining about the program and will say something about the artists. It's good because it's nice advertising for me and I do support the use of rain barrels (as a back yard conservationist).
